William Thorold was born in 1591. He was the second son of William Thorold from Marston, Lincolnshire. His mother was Frances Tyrwhitt. William studied law at Gray's Inn in London in 1610. He was made a knight in 1617.

Important Roles and Titles

William Thorold took over his family's estates after his older brother, Anthony, passed away. From 1632 to 1633, he served as the High Sheriff of Lincolnshire. This was an important role, like a chief law enforcement officer for the county.

In 1642, he was given the special title of baronet of Marston. A baronet is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down through the family.

Fighting in the Civil War

The English Civil War began in 1642. Sir William Thorold was a strong supporter of King Charles I. He fought for the King's side, known as the Cavaliers. Because he supported the King, he faced many difficulties.

In 1643, his property was taken by the other side. He also had to pay a very large fine of £4,160 in 1646. This was a huge amount of money back then!

Becoming a Politician

After the Civil War ended and the King was restored, Sir William Thorold became a politician. In 1661, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Grantham. He served in the Cavalier Parliament, which was a very important group of lawmakers at the time. He remained a Member of Parliament until 1677.

His Family Legacy

Sir William Thorold married Anne Blythe. She was from Stroxton, near Grantham.

Sir William Thorold lived to be 86 years old, which was quite old for his time. He passed away in 1678. Sadly, his two oldest sons, William and Anthony, died before him.

His grandson, also named William, became the second baronet. After him, his brothers Anthony and John became the third and fourth baronets. John did not have any children. So, the title then passed to William, who was the son of Sir William's third son, John. This William became the fifth baronet.
