Thorold baronets facts for kids

A baronetcy is a special title given by the King or Queen. It's like being a knight, but the title can be passed down through the family, usually from father to son. The Thorold family from Lincolnshire had four of these special titles created for them over time. Two were created under the Baronetage of England, and two under the Baronetage of Great Britain. As of 2014, one of these titles is still active.

The first Thorold Baronetcy, from Marston in Lincolnshire, was created on August 24, 1642. The first person to hold this title was William Thorold. He was a supporter of the King during the English Civil War. After the King was restored to power, Sir William became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Grantham.

Many later Thorold baronets were also important. The fourth Baronet was an MP for Grantham and Lincolnshire. The ninth Baronet also served as an MP for Lincolnshire. The tenth Baronet was famous for collecting many books. The twelfth Baronet represented Grantham in Parliament. The fifteenth Baronet was a captain in the Royal Navy and led the Lincolnshire County Council.

Today, the current Baronet has not officially proven his right to the title. Because of this, the baronetcy has been considered inactive since 1999.

The Thorold family first came to Marston in the mid-1300s. This happened when Sir Richard Thorold married a woman from the de Marston family. A famous member of the family was Anthony Wilson Thorold. He was the great-grandson of the ninth Baronet. He became a Bishop of Rochester and later a Bishop of Winchester. The family's main home was Syston Park, near South Kesteven, in Lincolnshire.

The second Thorold Baronetcy, from Hough-on-the-Hill in Lincolnshire, was created on June 14, 1644. This title was given to Robert Thorold. This baronetcy ended when the third Baronet died in 1706, as there were no more heirs to pass it on to.

The third Thorold Baronetcy, from Harmston in Lincolnshire, was created on September 9, 1709. This title was given to George Thorold. This baronetcy also ended when the second Baronet died in 1738.

The fourth Thorold Baronetcy, also from Harmston in Lincolnshire, was created on March 14, 1740. This title was for Nathaniel Thorold. He was the nephew of the first Baronet from the 1709 creation. This baronetcy ended when he died in 1764.
