Sir John Yonge, 1st Baronet (born October 2, 1603 – died August 26, 1663) was an important English politician. He lived at Great House in Colyton, Devon. Sir John was a member of the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament. He served there at different times between 1642 and 1660.

Early Life and Family

John Yonge was the son of Walter Yonge of Colyton and Jane Peryan. His mother was the daughter of Sir John Peryan. John Yonge became a successful merchant, which means he was involved in trade and business. He was honored with a knighthood on September 15, 1625. This meant he could be called "Sir John."

Political Career

Sir John Yonge became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1642. He was elected to represent Plymouth. His father was already an MP for Honiton at this time. So, both father and son served in the House of Commons together.

During a difficult time in English history, in December 1648, Sir John was among some members who were not allowed to continue in Parliament. This event was called Pride's Purge. However, he returned to Parliament later. He served during the time known as the Protectorate. He represented Honiton in 1654 and Devon in 1656. In 1660, he was again chosen to be an MP for Honiton in the Convention Parliament.

Later Life and Baronetcy

After the Restoration in England, when the monarchy was brought back, Sir John Yonge received another special honor. On September 26, 1661, he was made a Baronet of Culliton. A baronet is a title that can be passed down through the family, similar to a knight but hereditary. Sir John Yonge passed away two years later, when he was 59 years old.

Sir John Yonge was married to Elizabeth Strode. They had two sons and one daughter. His son, Walter, inherited his father's title and became the 2nd Baronet.
