Sir Joseph Renals, 1st Baronet (born February 21, 1843 – died November 1, 1908) was an important leader in London. He served as the Lord Mayor of London from 1894 to 1895.
Sir Joseph's Life and Work
Joseph Renals was born in Nottingham, England. His father was William Renals. Joseph went to school privately in Nottingham.
He became a partner in a company called Renals & Co. This company worked as merchants, which means they bought and sold goods, often from other countries.
In 1870, he married Mary Wilson. They had three children together.
Sir Joseph was very involved in the local government of London. He was a Common Councillor for the Aldersgate area from 1885 to 1888. A Common Councillor is like a local representative who helps make decisions for the city.
After that, he became an Alderman from 1888 to 1907. An Alderman is a senior member of the city council.
He also served as a Sheriff of the City of London from 1892 to 1893. The Sheriffs help with legal and ceremonial duties in the city.
His biggest role was becoming the Lord Mayor of London for 1894–95. The Lord Mayor is the head of the City of London Corporation, a very old and important governing body. During his time as Lord Mayor, there were some challenges and disagreements. When he finished his term, the City of London Corporation did not give him the usual vote of thanks.
On September 4, 1895, he was given the special title of Baronet. This is a title of honor given by the King or Queen, making him "Sir Joseph Renals."
