Sir Matthew Deane, 3rd Baronet (born around 1680, died 11 March 1747) was an important Irish leader and politician. He held a special title called a baronet and served in the government.

Who Was Sir Matthew Deane?

Sir Matthew Deane was the son of Sir Robert Deane, who was the 2nd Baronet of Muskerry. His family also lived at Springfield Castle in County Limerick. His mother was Anne Brettridge. She was one of three daughters of Captain Roger Brettridge from County Cork. Sir Matthew became the 3rd Baronet in 1712, taking over the title from his father.

His Role as a Leader

Sir Matthew Deane held several important positions during his life. These roles helped him serve the people of Ireland.

High Sheriff of County Cork

In 1714, Sir Matthew served as the High Sheriff of County Cork. A High Sheriff was a very important official in a county. They were in charge of keeping peace and order. They also helped with legal matters and elections in their area.

Serving in Parliament

Sir Matthew Deane was also a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Irish House of Commons. This was like being a representative in today's government. He helped make laws and decisions for Ireland.

  • From 1713 to 1715, he represented the area of Charleville.
  • Later, from 1728 until he passed away in 1747, he represented County Cork. This meant he spoke for the people of County Cork in the government.

His Family Life

Sir Matthew Deane married a woman named Jane Sharpe. She was the only daughter of Reverend William Sharpe. Sir Matthew and Jane had a large family together. They had three daughters and three sons.

Passing on the Title

When Sir Matthew Deane passed away, his oldest son, also named Matthew, became the 4th Baronet. However, this son passed away a few years later in 1751. After that, the baronet title went to Sir Matthew's third son, Robert. Robert then became the 5th Baronet.
