He was also a politician who served in the English House of Commons and later the British House of Commons for many years. This means he helped make laws for the country.

Sir Nathaniel Napier's Early Life

Sir Nathaniel Napier was the only son of Sir Nathaniel Napier, 2nd Baronet, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP). His mother was Blanche Wyndham. She was the daughter of a judge named Sir Hugh Wyndham.

Nathaniel started studying law at Lincoln's Inn in 1683. He then went to Trinity College, Oxford on April 10, 1685, when he was 16 years old.

In 1709, when his father passed away, Nathaniel became the 3rd Baronet. He also inherited Crichel House, the family home.

He was married twice. His first wife was Jane Worsley, whom he married in July 1691. Sadly, she died just one year later in 1692. He then married Catherine Alington on August 28, 1694. Catherine was the daughter of William Alington, 3rd Baron Alington.

His Political Career

Sir Nathaniel Napier was a Member of Parliament (MP) for many years. An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the country's parliament.

He was first elected without anyone running against him in 1695 for the area of Dorchester. He was elected again without opposition in 1698. In 1701, he won an election where he had to compete against others. He was then elected unopposed again later that same year. His father also joined him in Parliament after a special election.

In 1702, both Sir Nathaniel and his father were elected without anyone running against them. He won another election in 1705, but he did not run for election in 1708.

He was re-elected as a Tory (a political party) in 1710 and 1713, winning against other candidates. In 1715, he was elected without opposition. He decided to retire from politics in 1722.

Death and Family Legacy

Sir Nathaniel Napier passed away at More Critchell on February 24, 1728. He and his second wife, Catherine, had six children:

  • William
  • Gerard
  • Wyndham
  • Diana
  • Catherine
  • Blanch

After his death, his sons William and then Gerard became the next Baronets. However, the title of Baronet ended when Gerard's son died. The family estates then went to Humphrey Sturt, who was the son of Sir Nathaniel's daughter, Diana, and her husband, Humphrey Sturt.
