Who Was Sir Nicholas Carew?

Early Life and Family

Nicholas Carew was born on February 6, 1687. He was the only son of Sir Francis Carew and Anne Boteler who lived to adulthood. His father passed away when Nicholas was just two years old, in 1689. Nicholas then inherited the family home, Beddington estate. At that time, the house was not in good condition.

His family had an interesting history. Nicholas's great-grandfather, Sir Nicholas Throckmorton, had changed his name to Carew. This happened when he inherited the Beddington estate from his uncle, Sir Francis Carew.

Nicholas went to St. Catharine's College, Cambridge in April 1703 to study. Later, on February 2, 1709, he married Elizabeth Hackett. She was the daughter of Nicholas Hackett from North Crawley, Buckinghamshire.

Becoming a Politician

Nicholas Carew had an uncle, also named Nicholas, who was very interested in politics. His uncle encouraged him to get involved.

In December 1708, Nicholas Carew was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Haslemere. This happened in a special election called a by-election. He didn't have anyone running against him, so he won easily.

His Time in Parliament

Nicholas Carew didn't make a big impact in Parliament at first. He lost his seat in the general election of 1710. He didn't try to get elected in 1713. However, he was elected again for Haslemere in March 1714.

In January 1715, he was given a special title: Baronet. This means he became "Sir Nicholas Carew, 1st Baronet."

At the general election in 1715, he was elected again as a Whig MP for Haslemere. There was a careful check of the votes, called a scrutiny, before he was confirmed as the winner. He generally supported the government in power, known as the "Administration." However, he did not support a specific proposed law called the "Peerage Bill."

In the 1722 general election, he changed the area he represented. He was elected as an MP for Surrey.

Later Life and Family

Sir Nicholas Carew passed away on March 18, 1727, when he was 40 years old. This was just before another general election.

He and his wife, Elizabeth, had two sons and two daughters. His second son, Nicholas Hacket Carew, was the only one who lived to adulthood. He took over the Baronet title after his father's death.

His wife, Elizabeth, later married William Chetwynd, who had also been an MP. She died in February 1740 in Marlborough, Wiltshire, while traveling to the spa town of Bath, Somerset.
