Sir Peter Teazle (born 1784 – died 18 August 1811) was a famous brown Thoroughbred racehorse from Great Britain. He was known for winning many races. After his racing career, he became a very successful father (called a sire) to many other racehorses. He was the top sire in Great Britain and Ireland nine times! Sir Peter Teazle also helped continue the important family line of another famous horse named Herod.

About Sir Peter Teazle's Family

Sir Peter Teazle was a brown horse. He was bred and owned by a nobleman named Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby.

His Father: Highflyer

Sir Peter Teazle's father was a horse named Highflyer. Highflyer was also a very successful sire. He was the top sire 16 times! Highflyer had 469 winning horses. Seven of his children won important "classic" races. Some of Highflyer's other famous children included a mare (female horse) named Prunella, and sons like Delpini, Diamond, and Traveller.

His Mother: Papillon

Sir Peter Teazle's mother was a mare named Papillon. Her father, Snap, was also a top sire four times. Snap was known for producing horses with great speed. Papillon herself was a decent racehorse. She finished third in a race called the Craven Stakes in 1773. Sir Peter was her seventh foal out of 12. Papillon also had other winning children. One was a filly (young female horse) named Lady Teazle (born 1781). Lady Teazle finished second in a big race called The Oaks. She also won 11 races during her career.

Where His Name Came From

Sir Peter Teazle was named after a character. This character is from a famous old play. The play is a funny story called The School for Scandal.

Sir Peter Teazle's Racing Career

Sir Peter Teazle started racing when he was three years old. He had an amazing first year, winning every race he entered!

Triumphs at Age Three

His first big win was The Derby. This is a very famous and important race. He also won a sweepstakes race at Ascot. A sweepstakes is a race where the prize money comes from the entry fees of the horses. He then won the 1,000 Guineas subscription race. This race was only for horses his age. He also won the Prince of Wales's Plate.

After these wins, he raced against another horse named Bullfinch. Sir Peter Teazle beat Bullfinch in a 500 guineas match race. A match race is when only two horses compete. He then won against Bullfinch again without even racing. This is called a "forfeit" win. He finished his first year by winning a 40 guineas purse and another sweepstakes.

Racing at Age Four

When Sir Peter Teazle was four (in 1788), he continued his winning streak. At Newmarket, he won the Jockey Stakes. He also won the rich Claret Stakes and the Fortescue Stakes. He beat a horse named Buzzard twice in these races. He was also supposed to race against a horse named Mentor. But Mentor's owner paid him a "compromise" instead. This means they settled the race without actually running it.

Later, he won the Grosvenor Stakes over two miles. In October, he again received a forfeit win against Mentor. This was in a 700 guineas match race.

First Defeat and Retirement

Sir Peter Teazle then had his first loss. This was in a 500 guineas match race against a horse named Dash. Dash was a four-year-old Florizel colt. Sir Peter Teazle had to carry 32 pounds more weight than Dash. Also, Sir Peter Teazle had a problem with his shoe. He had to stop training for several days before the race. This likely affected his performance.

His last race of that year was a 300 guineas match. He raced against a good mare named Maria and won. He finished his four-year-old season with seven wins out of eight starts. His only loss was when he was carrying a lot more weight.

After this, he lost another 500 guineas match to Dash. This was again due to him carrying more weight and having a shoeing injury. He then beat Maria again in a 300 guineas match.

Sir Peter Teazle then won the Newmarket Craven race. He beat Meteor again in this race. However, he then had to give up two races. One was a six-mile, 1,000 guineas match against Dash. The other was a 500 guineas match against Meteor. This was probably because he had physical problems. He then lost to Mulberry, who was carrying 28 pounds less weight. This race was over four miles. Finally, Sir Peter Teazle got injured in a later race. Because of this, he stopped racing and became a breeding horse.

Sir Peter Teazle's Breeding Success

After his racing career, Sir Peter Teazle went to Derby's Knowsley Stud in Lancashire. This is where horses are kept for breeding. He was incredibly successful as a father (sire).

He produced many champions. His children won the Doncaster Cup once. They also won the Epsom Derby four times. Two of his daughters won the Epsom Oaks. Four of his children won the St. Leger Stakes. Sir Peter Teazle was the top sire in Great Britain and Ireland nine times! This was from 1799–1802 and again from 1804–1809.

Two of his sons, Walton and Sir Harry, also became top sires. Walton was a top sire in Britain for two years. Sir Harry was a top sire in the United States.
