Sir Richard Bulkeley, 2nd Baronet (born August 17, 1660 – died April 7, 1710) was an important Irish politician. He held the title of Baronet, which is a special hereditary title given by the British Crown. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, a famous group for scientists.

Early Life and Education

Richard Bulkeley was the older son of Sir Richard Bulkeley, 1st Baronet. His mother was Catherine Bysse. Her father, John Bysse, was a high-ranking judge in Ireland.

Richard went to two well-known universities. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland. He also attended Christ Church, Oxford in England. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from both in 1680. The next year, he became a Fellow at Trinity College. He then received his Master of Arts degree in 1682.

Career and Public Service

In 1685, Richard Bulkeley became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This honor meant he was recognized for his interest in science and learning. In the same year, he inherited his father's title. He became the 2nd Baronet Bulkeley. His family had estates in Old Bawn (County Dublin) and Dunlaven (County Wicklow).

Political Life

After the Glorious Revolution of 1689, the Irish Parliament took away his titles for a short time. However, three years later, he became a member of the Irish House of Commons. This was the main law-making body in Ireland at the time. He represented the area of Fethard (County Wexford). He served in Parliament until he passed away in 1710.

Family and Legacy

On February 16, 1685, Sir Richard Bulkeley married Lucy Downing. They were married at Westminster Abbey in London. Lucy was the daughter of Sir George Downing, 1st Baronet. He was a very important statesman and financier.

Richard and Lucy had one son, but he sadly died when he was a baby. Sir Richard Bulkeley passed away in 1710. He was buried in Ewell. Because he had no living children, his Baronet title ended with him.

After Richard's death, his wife Lucy married again. She married William Worth. Lucy herself passed away just two years after Sir Richard. Richard's family lands were then passed to his niece, Hester. Hester later married Lucy's stepson, James Worth Tynte.
