Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Robert Abdy, 3rd Baronet (born April 8, 1688 – died August 27, 1748) was an important British politician from Essex. He was a member of the Tory political party. He served in the British House of Commons, which is like a parliament or a group of lawmakers, for many years, from 1727 until he passed away in 1748.

Early Life and Family

Robert Abdy was the only son of Sir John Abdy, who was the 2nd Baronet. His mother was Jane Nicholas. When Robert was just three years old, in 1691, he became the 3rd Baronet after his father died.

He went to Trinity College, Oxford, a famous university, starting in 1705. In 1711, he married Theodosia Bramstone in London. They had two sons and two daughters together.

A Career in Politics

Sir Robert Abdy became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Essex in 1727. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the House of Commons. He was elected without anyone running against him that year.

He often voted against the government's plans. He was re-elected in 1734 and again in 1741. He was part of a group called the Jacobites. This group wanted a different royal family to rule Britain.

He was elected one last time in 1747, again without anyone running against him. Sir Robert Abdy was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. This means he was part of a group that studied old things and history.

Later Years

Sir Robert Abdy died on August 27, 1748, when he was 60 years old. He was buried in a place called Stapleford Abbotts in Essex. His oldest son, John, became the next Baronet.

Sir Robert Abdy also had a large collection of books. Some of these books, with his special bookplate, can still be found in libraries today.
