Sir Robert was the only son of Sir Kenrick Clayton, 2nd Baronet. His family lived at a place called Marden Park in Surrey. When his father passed away in 1769, Robert became the 3rd Baronet. This meant he inherited his father's special title.

A Career in Parliament

Sir Robert Clayton spent many years as a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person chosen to represent a certain area. They speak for the people in that area in Parliament.

He represented different areas during his career:

  • He was an MP for Bletchingley from 1768 to 1783.
  • Then, he represented Surrey from 1783 to 1784.
  • He went back to being an MP for Bletchingley from 1787 to 1796.
  • Finally, he was an MP for Ilchester from 1796 until he died.

His Later Life and Legacy

Sir Robert Clayton passed away in May 1799. He had married a woman named Mary Standert. She was the daughter of Frederick Standert from Greenwich. Sir Robert and Mary did not have any children.

Because he had no children, his title, the Baronetcy, went to his first cousin. This was Sir William Clayton, 4th Baronet. William was the son of Sir Robert's father's younger brother, William.
