Sir William Clayton, 4th Baronet facts for kids
Sir William Clayton, 4th Baronet (born April 16, 1762 – died January 26, 1834) was an English politician. He lived at Harleyford Manor near Great Marlow in Buckinghamshire.
William Clayton was the oldest son of William Clayton (who lived from about 1718 to 1783). His family lived at Harleyford Manor. His great-uncle was Sir Robert Clayton, who was a rich banker and a former Lord Mayor of London.
Sir William went to Queen's College, Oxford for his education.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In 1783, Sir William was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Great Marlow. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's parliament. He took over this role from his father.
He held this position until 1790. He decided not to run for election again in the general election that year.
Inheriting a Title and Land
In 1799, Sir William inherited the title of "Baronet" from his cousin, Sir Robert Clayton, 3rd Baronet. This meant he became the 4th Baronet in his family line. He also inherited Marden Park, which was rented out to Joseph Buonaparte.
Sir William Clayton passed away on January 26, 1834, when he was 71 years old. His oldest son, William Robert, became the next Baronet. William Robert also became an MP for Great Marlow later, serving from 1832 to 1842.
