Sir Simon Haughton Clarke, 9th Baronet facts for kids
Sir Simon Haughton Clarke, 9th Baronet (born 1764, died 1832) was a very rich businessman. He traded goods with islands in the West Indies (the Caribbean). People said he was the seventh wealthiest man in England during his time.
Sir Simon had a large and important collection of paintings. He kept them at his big house called Oakhill. In 1821, he bought a huge property that stretched across a wide area, from Chase Side in Southgate to High Road in Whetstone. After he passed away, his wife and sons lived at Oakhill until 1857. Then, the property was divided and sold.
You can still see a special monument (a kind of memorial) for him at St Mary the Virgin church in East Barnet. It was placed where you could see it from his house, Oakhill.
