Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Thomas Beaumont, 1st Baronet (died August 11, 1676) was an important English politician. He lived during a time of big changes in England, including the rule of Oliver Cromwell and the return of the King.

Sir Thomas Beaumont's Life

Sir Thomas Beaumont was the oldest son of Sir Henry Beaumont and Elizabeth Turpin. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Leicestershire. This meant he helped make laws for the country. He served as an MP from 1654 to 1659.

He was also the High Sheriff of Leicestershire from 1668 to 1669. A High Sheriff was a very important local official.

On March 5, 1658, he was given the title of baronet. This title was given to him by Oliver Cromwell, who was then the Lord Protector of England. The title was connected to Stoughton Grange in Leicester.

However, after the King returned to power in England (this was called the Restoration), the title given by Cromwell was no longer valid. So, Sir Thomas received a new patent, or official document, for his baronet title. This new patent was dated February 21, 1661.

Sir Thomas's Family

Sir Thomas Beaumont married Elizabeth Trott. She was the daughter of Sir Nicholas Trott. They had three sons and three daughters together.

Sir Thomas was buried in Stoughton, Leicestershire. His oldest son, Henry, took over the baronet title after him.
