Thomas Sclater was born in Halifax, Yorkshire. He was the son of William Sclater. Thomas went to Cambridge University and became a Fellow at Trinity College. This means he was a senior member of the college. He also studied at Oxford University. He earned degrees like Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Arts (MA). Later, he became a Doctor of Medicine in 1649.
Political Career
In 1659, Thomas Sclater was chosen to be a Member of Parliament. He represented Cambridge University in the Third Protectorate Parliament. This was a special meeting of Parliament during a time when England was not ruled by a king.
After the king returned to power, a time called the Restoration, Thomas Sclater received a special honor. On July 25, 1660, he was made a Baronet of Cambridge. A baronet is a title of honor, like a knight, but it can be passed down in the family.
Land and Later Life
Sir Thomas Sclater bought a lot of land in Cambridgeshire, including a place called Catley Park. Owning land was a sign of wealth and power back then. From 1683 to 1684, he served as the Sheriff of Cambridgeshire. The Sheriff was an important official who helped keep law and order in the county.
Sir Thomas Sclater passed away when he was 69 years old. He had married Susan Comber in 1653. She was the widow of Thomas Comber. When Sir Thomas died, his special title of baronet ended because he had no children to pass it on to.
