Sir Thomas Williams, 1st Baronet (born around 1621 – died 1712) was an important Welsh doctor and politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament, from 1675 to 1679. He was also a special "Chymical Physician" to King Charles II.

Who Was Sir Thomas Williams?

Sir Thomas Williams was born in Breconshire, Wales. His father was Thomas Williams of Talyllyn, and his mother was Mary Pare. Mary's father was John Pare from Poston, Herefordshire.

Becoming a Doctor

Sir Thomas Williams became a doctor and worked in Kent, England. In 1660, he was allowed to practice medicine by the College of Physicians in London. He later earned his M.D. degree from the University of Cambridge in 1669.

Working for the King

In 1670, Sir Thomas became the "Chymical Physician" to King Charles II. This was a special role, as "chymical" doctors used early forms of chemistry in their medicines. In 1674, the King made him a baronet, which is a special title of honor.

A Career in Politics

Sir Thomas Williams also entered politics. In 1675, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for a place called Weobley. He served in the Cavalier Parliament, which was the Parliament at that time, until 1678.

Sir Thomas Williams was married two times and had children.

First Marriage and Children

His first wife was Anne Hogbeane. They got married before 1653. Anne was the daughter of John Hogbeane, a lawyer from Elham, Kent. Sir Thomas and Anne had two sons:

Anne passed away in 1664 and was buried in Elham.

Second Marriage and Children

Sir Thomas married again in 1666 to Grace Carwardine. She was a widow from Madley, Herefordshire, and her father was Thomas Lewis. Sir Thomas and Grace had two more sons:

  • James Williams (died 1727), who became a church official at St. Paul's in London.
  • Thomas Williams (died around 1700).

Sir Thomas Williams lived to be about 90 years old. He passed away in 1712 and was buried in Glasbury, Breconshire.
