Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir John Williams, 2nd Baronet, of Elham (born 1653, died 1723) was an important English politician. He came from a Welsh family and served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the British Parliament. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1701 to 1705.

Who Was Sir John Williams?

Sir John Williams was born in 1653 and was baptised in a place called Elham in Kent, England. His father was Sir Thomas Williams, 1st Baronet, who was a special doctor to King Charles II.

John went to school in Canterbury and then studied at Peterhouse, Cambridge, a famous university. Around 1675, he was given the title of "Sir" because he was knighted. This was a special honor given by the King.

His Time as a Politician

Sir John Williams became a Member of Parliament (MP) for a region called Herefordshire. An MP is someone who is elected to represent the people of their area in the House of Commons. This is where laws are discussed and made for the country.

He served as an MP for four years, from 1701 to 1705. In 1712, he also inherited the title of "Baronet" from his father, becoming the 2nd Baronet. A Baronet is a special hereditary title, like a knight, but it can be passed down through the family.

Family Life and Legacy

Sir John Williams married Mary Powell in 1675. She was the daughter of Sir William Powell, 1st Baronet.

Sir John and Mary had eight children together: two sons and six daughters. Sadly, only three of their daughters lived longer than their parents. Sir John Williams passed away in 1723.
