Who Was Sir William Blackett?

Sir William Blackett was a Baronet, which is a special title of honor passed down through families. He inherited this title from his father, who was the first Sir William Blackett. He also inherited Wallington Hall, a large and beautiful estate.

Early Life and Family

William Blackett was the son of William Blackett and Julia Conyers. He went to University College, Oxford to study. When his father passed away in 1705, William became the 2nd Baronet. This meant he took on his father's title and responsibilities, including managing the family's lands.

Political Career

Sir William Blackett was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1710. He kept this important job until 1728. As a Member of Parliament, he helped make laws and decisions for the country. He was also elected Mayor of Newcastle for the year 1718–1719, which is a big role in leading the city.

His Legacy

Sir William Blackett married Barbara Villiers in 1725. She was the daughter of the Earl of Jersey. They did not have any children together. However, Sir William had a daughter named Elizabeth Orde from before his marriage. When Sir William died, his Baronet title ended because he had no sons to pass it on to.

He left his estates, including Wallington Hall, to his nephew, Sir Walter Calverley, 2nd Baronet. But there were some special conditions. His nephew had to marry Elizabeth Orde, Sir William's daughter, and also change his last name to Blackett. This way, the Blackett name would continue to be connected with the family's properties.
