Sir William Russell, 1st Baronet, of Charlton Park (born May 29, 1773 – died September 26, 1839) was an important Scottish doctor. He was known for his medical skills and for helping people during a serious illness.

Early Life and Education

William Russell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the sixth son in his family. His father, John Russell, was a lawyer in Edinburgh.

William studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He earned his M.D. degree there. This means he became a fully qualified doctor.

Medical Career and Achievements

After finishing his studies, Dr. Russell traveled to Calcutta, which is now called Kolkata, in India. He became a very successful doctor there. He built a large medical practice, helping many people.

Later, he returned to London, England. At that time, a serious illness called the cholera epidemic was spreading. Cholera is a disease that causes severe sickness and can be deadly. Dr. Russell worked hard to help those affected by it.

Because of his excellent medical work during this difficult time, he received a special honor. On February 18, 1832, he was made a baronet. This is a title given by the King or Queen for important service to the country. He became "Sir William Russell, 1st Baronet."

In April 1832, he was also chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and famous group of scientists. Being a Fellow means you are recognized for your important contributions to science.

Later Life and Family

Sir William Russell passed away at Charlton Park in Gloucestershire, England. He was 66 years old.

His son, Sir William Russell, 2nd Baronet (1822–1892), also became a well-known person. He was an officer in the British Army.
