Sir William Wyndham, 1st Baronet (born around 1632 – died October 29, 1683), lived at a place called Orchard Wyndham in Somerset, England. He was an important person in politics during his time. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Somerset in 1656. Later, he was an MP for Taunton twice, in 1659 and 1660. He also held the role of Sheriff of Somerset from 1679 to 1680. Who Was Sir William Wyndham?

William Wyndham was the oldest son of John Wyndham, who passed away in 1649. His grandfather was also named Sir John Wyndham. The family lived at Orchard Wyndham. They were connected to important families, including Lady Margaret Howard, whose father was the 1st Duke of Norfolk. William's mother was Catherine Hopton.

Sir William's Political Journey

William Wyndham was studying at a law school called Lincoln's Inn when his father died in 1649. After this, he traveled abroad for a few years, from 1650 to 1653.

In 1656, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Somerset. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the country's government. He served in what was called the Second Protectorate Parliament.

Later, in 1659, he was elected MP for Taunton in the Third Protectorate Parliament. He was elected for Taunton again in 1660 for the Convention Parliament.

By August 24, 1660, he was given the title of "Knight." In 1661, he was re-elected as MP for Taunton for the Cavalier Parliament. King Charles II then made him a Baronet on December 9, 1661. This title was "of Orchard, Somerset." He also served as the Sheriff of Somerset from 1679 to 1680. A Sheriff was a very important local official, like a chief law enforcement officer for the county.

Family Life

Sir William Wyndham married Frances Hungerford on June 8, 1653. She was the daughter of Anthony Hungerford from Farleigh Castle, Somerset. Together, they had a large family: five sons and six daughters.

Their children included:

  • Sir Edward Wyndham, 2nd Baronet (born around 1667 – died 1695). He was their oldest son and took over the family title and estate at Orchard Wyndham after his father.
  • Joan Wyndham (1669–1687). She was the first wife of William Cary, who lived in Clovelly, Devon.
