Sir William Hovell Browne ffolkes, 3rd Baronet (born 21 November 1847 – died 9 May 1912) was an English politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party. He served in the House of Commons, which is a main part of the UK Parliament, from 1880 to 1885.

Early Life and Family

William ffolkes was born in 1847. His parents were Martin William Browne ffolkes and Henrietta Bridget Wale. His mother was the daughter of Sir Charles Wale.

William went to Harrow School, a well-known school. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, a famous university. When he was young, his father passed away in 1849. In 1860, William became the 3rd Baronet after his grandfather, Sir William ffolkes, 2nd Baronet. A "baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Public Service Roles

Before becoming a Member of Parliament, William ffolkes held several important roles. He was a captain in the Norfolk Artillery Militia. This was a local military group.

He also served as a Justice of the Peace (J.P.). This meant he helped keep law and order in his local area. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant, which is another important local position. In 1876, he was the High Sheriff of Norfolk. The High Sheriff was a very old and respected role, mainly involved in law enforcement and ceremonies for the county.

William ffolkes first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1874. He ran for the area of King's Lynn, but he did not win that time.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

At the general election in 1880, he tried again. This time, he was elected as the MP for King's Lynn. He represented the people of King's Lynn in the House of Commons until 1885.

Later Public Roles

After his time in Parliament, William ffolkes continued to serve his community. He became the chairman of the Norfolk County Council. This council helps manage local services and decisions for Norfolk county. In 1909, he received a special honor called the KCVO. This award is given by the King or Queen for personal service to the monarch.

Personal Life and Legacy

Sir William ffolkes lived at Hillington Hall in Hillington, Norfolk. He married Emily Charlotte Elwes in 1875. Emily was the daughter of Robert Elwes.

William and Emily had one daughter. She later married John Dawnay, 9th Viscount Downe. Sir William ffolkes passed away in 1912 when he was 64 years old. Since he did not have a son, his cousin inherited the baronetcy after him.
