Sisbert's Secret Plan
In 693, Sisbert was involved in a secret plan against the king at the time, Egica. Sisbert and others wanted to remove King Egica from his throne. They also planned to get rid of Queen Liuvigoto and four of the king's closest helpers. These helpers were Frogellus, Theodomir, Liuvila, and Tecla.
Taking Control of Toledo
It seems that the people involved in this secret plan might have taken control of the city of Toledo. They even made special coins with the name of Duke Sunifred on them. This suggests they wanted Duke Sunifred to become the new king.
The King's Victory
However, King Egica found out about the plan. He was able to defeat Sisbert and the other people who were trying to overthrow him. To deal with the situation, King Egica called a very important meeting. This meeting was called the Sixteenth Council of Toledo. It was a gathering of many bishops and other church leaders.
Sisbert's Punishment
At the Council, Sisbert had to admit that he was guilty of planning against the king. Because of his actions, he faced a serious punishment. Sisbert and all his future family members were not allowed to hold any important positions in the royal court. These positions were called "palatine offices."
Changes in Church Leadership
After this event, there were some unusual changes in the church. Archbishop Felix of Seville was moved from Seville to become the new Archbishop of Toledo. Also, Archbishop Faustinus of Braga was moved from Braga to take Felix's place in Seville.
