Julian of Toledo (born in 642, died in 690) was an important religious leader from Toledo, Spain. He was born in Toledo, which was part of Hispania (modern-day Spain and Portugal) at the time.
Julian received a good education at the cathedral school. He became a monk and later the leader, or abbot, of the Agali monastery. He was also a student of Saint Eugene II. Eventually, he became the archbishop of Toledo.
Julian was the first bishop to have special authority, called primacy, over the entire Iberian Peninsula. This meant he was a very powerful figure in the church. His rise to this position caused some disagreement among other church leaders. Also, his ideas about the Trinity (a core Christian belief about God) were different from what the Vatican believed, which caused some concern.
Important Works and Councils
Julian led several important church meetings, known as councils and synods. He also helped update the Mozarabic rite, which was a special way of performing church services in Spain.
He was a very productive writer. His most famous book was Prognostics, which talked about death and what comes after. He also wrote a history book about a war involving King Wamba. This book is one of the few historical writings we have from that time.
Julian also wrote a book in 687 about life in the future. He encouraged the Visigothic kings in Hispania to make laws that would try to convert Jewish people to Christianity. For example, he helped King Erwig pass strict laws at the Twelfth Council of Toledo. In 686, he wrote a book called De Comprobatione Aetatis Sextae Contra Judaeos. This book used messianic prophecies from the Bible to try and convince Jewish people to convert.
Later Life and Legacy
Julian of Toledo died in Toledo in 690 from natural causes. His special day of remembrance, called a memorial, is on March 8.
Today, you can see a portrait of him in the cathedral of Toledo. There is even a bar in Oxford named after him.
