Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sister Mary Paul Mulquin (born Katherine Mulquin in 1842 – died 10 February 1930) was an important Roman Catholic nun and teacher. She was born in Adare, a town in Limerick, Ireland.

In 1863, Katherine decided to join a special group of Catholic women called the Sisters of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. When she joined, she changed her name to Sister Mary Paul. This group of sisters dedicates their lives to God and often works in education.

A Journey to Australia

In 1873, Sister Mary Paul began a long and exciting journey. She traveled all the way to Australia! She sailed with six other nuns on a ship called the SS Great Britain. They arrived in Melbourne, Australia, on December 21, 1873.

During her long trip across the ocean, Sister Mary Paul kept a diary. In this diary, she wrote down what her daily life was like on the ship. It gives us a peek into what it was like to travel so far back then.

Building Schools in Australia

Once in Australia, Sister Mary Paul and the other nuns worked hard to help build new schools. They helped to start a Presentation Convent and College in a place called St Kilda, Victoria. A convent is a home for nuns, and a college is a school. This new school helped many young people get an education.

Sister Mary Paul retired from her active work in 1890. She lived a long life, passing away when she was about 88 years old. She is buried in St Kilda Cemetery, right next to the other nuns who traveled with her from Ireland.
