Sixteen Acres is a lively neighborhood located in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. Even though its name might make you think it's small, this area actually covers a much larger space, about 4,506 acres! Many of the homes and buildings here were built after World War II, giving it a relaxed, suburban feel with lots of green spaces and family-friendly streets.

Exploring Sixteen Acres

Sixteen Acres is home to several important places. You'll find Western New England University here, along with schools like the SABIS International High School and Pioneer Valley Christian Academy. For those who enjoy sports, there's also the 18-hole Veterans Memorial Golf Course.

Homes and Green Spaces

The neighborhood has many different types of homes. You can see newer ranches, colonials, split-levels, and Cape Cod style houses. There are also large condominium buildings on Nassau Drive.

Sixteen Acres is also known for its beautiful outdoor areas. It has Greenleaf Park, which is about 28 acres big, perfect for playing and relaxing. The Greenleaf community center is nearby, and there's a local branch library. For summer fun, residents can enjoy two private beach clubs, Bass Pond and the Paddle Club.

Shopping and Getting Around

If you need to go shopping, you'll find many stores grouped together on Wilbraham Road and Allen Street. These "commercial clusters" make it easy to find what you need close to home.

Living in Sixteen Acres also means you can easily reach other places. It's a quick drive to nearby East Longmeadow, where companies like Hasbro and American Saw are located. The Massachusetts Turnpike is also just a short drive away on Parker Street, making travel simple.

A Look Back in Time

The story of Sixteen Acres began in the early 1900s. A man named Theodore Granger bought a piece of land that was exactly 16 acres. He dreamed of becoming a farmer, and Granger Street is named after him today.

However, Theodore Granger was better at carpentry than farming, so his farm didn't do very well. He eventually sold parts of his land or gave them to his family members. For a long time, the people living in this area were quite separated from the rest of Springfield because there was no public transportation to connect them.

Sixteen Acres stayed mostly a rural, quiet area with lots of open land until after World War II. After the war, many new homes were built, and the neighborhood grew into the lively community it is today.
