Edy Sixten Jernberg (born February 6, 1929 – died July 14, 2012) was a famous Swedish cross-country skier. Many people consider him one of the most successful cross-country skiers of all time!

Between 1952 and 1964, he took part in 363 ski races. He finished in the top three in 263 of those races and won 134 of them. During this amazing time, he won four world titles and nine Olympic medals. In 12 starts over three Winter Olympic Games, he always finished in fifth place or better. From 1955 to 1960, he won 86 out of 161 competitions.

Who Was Sixten Jernberg?

Before becoming a professional skier, Sixten Jernberg worked as a blacksmith and a lumberjack. He was known for his incredible strength and endurance. He was especially good at longer distances in skiing. Four of his eight gold medals were in the 50-kilometer race. He also won one gold in the 30-kilometer race and three in the 4 × 10-kilometer relay.

He also won the famous Vasaloppet race twice, in 1955 and 1960. In 1954, he won the 15-kilometer race at the Holmenkollen ski festival. Sixten Jernberg was known for his tough spirit. Once, he competed in a 50-kilometer race even though he was feeling very unwell.

Awards and Recognition

For his great success in cross-country skiing, Jernberg received several important awards.

  • In 1960, he was given the Holmenkollen medal. He shared this award with other famous skiers like Helmut Recknagel and Sverre Stensheim.
  • In 1956, he also won the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal. He shared this award with pentathlete Lars Hall.
  • After he retired in 1964, the International Olympic Committee honored him. In 1965, they gave him the Mohammed Taher Trophy. This award was for his important contributions to Nordic skiing.

Sixten Jernberg passed away at the age of 83. His nephew, Ingemar Jernberg, also became an Olympic athlete in pole vaulting.
