In the traditions of the Lakota people, Škaŋ (pronounced Shkahn) is a very important spirit. It represents the "Motion of the universe." Think of it as the energy that makes everything move and change. Škaŋ is one of the powerful spirits created by Wakȟáŋ Tȟáŋka, the Great Spirit.

What is Škaŋ?

Škaŋ is a central figure in Lakota beliefs. It is seen as the active force behind all things. It helps the world keep moving and changing. Without Škaŋ, nothing would happen.

The Great Spirit and Creation

According to Lakota tradition, Wakȟáŋ Tȟáŋka, also known as the Great Mystery, first thought about itself. From these thoughts, four powerful spirits were created. These are sometimes called the Superior Spirits.

The first spirit created was Íŋyaŋ, the Rock. Íŋyaŋ then created a friend, Makhá, who is Mother Earth. Next, Škaŋ, the Sky, was created to wrap around Íŋyaŋ and Makhá. Everything was still dark at this point. Finally, Wí, the Sun, was created to bring light to the world.

Škaŋ and Life's Energy

Škaŋ is believed to be the source of all living things. Every living being has a spirit, and this spirit is given to it by Škaŋ when it is created. These spirits are thought to come from the stars. When a living thing dies, its spirit does not disappear. Instead, it returns to Škaŋ and goes back to the stars. This shows the never-ending cycle of life and energy in the universe.
