Skip-Bo facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Skip-Bo is a fun card game for kids and families. It's all about matching numbers and being the first player to get rid of all your cards. Think of it like a puzzle where you build stacks of cards in order!

What is Skip-Bo?

Skip-Bo is a card game played with a special deck of cards. The goal is to be the first player to play all the cards from your "stockpile." You do this by playing cards in numerical order, from 1 to 12.

How to Play Skip-Bo

Playing Skip-Bo is easy once you learn the basics. Here’s a simple guide:

The Cards You Use

The game uses a deck of 162 cards. Most cards have numbers from 1 to 12. There are also special "Skip-Bo" wild cards. These wild cards can be used as any number you need, which makes them very helpful!

Setting Up the Game

To start, each player gets a "stockpile" of cards. The number of cards in your stockpile depends on how many people are playing. For example, if there are two to four players, everyone gets 30 cards. If there are five or six players, everyone gets 20 cards. You place your stockpile face down, and turn the top card face up.

Playing Your Turn

On your turn, you draw cards until you have five cards in your hand. You then try to play cards from your hand, your stockpile, or your "discard piles" onto "building piles" in the middle of the table.

Building Piles

Building piles start with a "1" card. After that, you add cards in order: 2, 3, 4, and so on, all the way up to 12. Once a building pile reaches 12, it's removed, and a new one can be started. There can be up to four building piles at a time.

Discard Piles

If you can't play any more cards on the building piles, you can put cards into your own "discard piles." Each player can have up to four discard piles. You can play cards from these piles on later turns.

Winning the Game

The first player to get rid of all the cards in their stockpile wins the game! It takes a mix of strategy and a little bit of luck to win.

History of Skip-Bo

Skip-Bo was created by a woman named Merle Robbins in 1967. She also invented the popular card game Uno. Skip-Bo was first sold by a company called International Games, Inc. Later, in 1992, the big toy company Mattel bought the game.
