Skip Young's Wrestling Journey
Starting as Sweet Brown Sugar
Skip Young began his wrestling career in 1975. When he first started in Florida, he wrestled under a mask as "Sweet Brown Sugar." Wearing a mask is a common way for wrestlers to create a mysterious character. As Sweet Brown Sugar, he won the NWA Florida Southern Heavyweight Championship three times between 1979 and 1982.
He also formed a strong team with another wrestler named Butch Reed in Florida. Together, they won the NWA North American Tag Team Championship in April 1982. A tag team championship is a title won by two wrestlers working together.
Wrestling in Japan and Puerto Rico
In the early 1980s, Skip Young traveled to Japan to wrestle. One notable match was on January 3, 1982, in Tokyo. He teamed up with The Destroyer to face Genichiro Tenryu and Ashura Hara.
Skip Young also wrestled in Puerto Rico for the World Wrestling Council. He often wore a hat with the Puerto Rican flag to the ring. In interviews, Skip Young shared how much he loved the culture of Puerto Rico.
Unmasked in Texas
After leaving Florida in 1984, Young started wrestling without his mask in Texas. There, he teamed up with "Pistol" Pez Whatley. They had a rivalry with a team called the PYT Express. Later, in 1987, he won the WCWA Tag Team titles with "Mr. USA" Tony Atlas.
Skip Young stopped wrestling professionally in 1997.
