SkyCity Queenstown is an entertainment center with casino games in Queenstown, New Zealand. A casino is a place where people can play games of chance. It first opened its doors on December 7, 2000.
The business is owned by a company called SkyCity Entertainment Group. It is one of only six casinos that are allowed to operate in New Zealand.
History of the Casino
SkyCity Queenstown was the fourth casino to open in New Zealand. When it started, it had eight gaming tables and 86 gaming machines. It also had a special room with four more tables for VIP guests.
The casino has permission, called a license, to have up to 339 gaming machines and 23 tables in total. This license is set to last until December 2025.
In 2012, SkyCity Entertainment Group bought the rest of the casino shares from another company, Skyline Enterprises. This made SkyCity the only owner. As part of the agreement, SkyCity sold its shares in the Christchurch Casino.
The Wharf Casino Story
In 2013, SkyCity bought another small casino in Queenstown called the Wharf Casino. It was renamed SkyCity Wharf Casino. This casino had a license to run six gaming tables and 74 gaming machines.
However, the SkyCity Wharf Casino is now closed. The company could not agree on a new lease for the building it was in. New Zealand law does not allow casinos to move to a new location, so it had to shut down.
Helping the Community
SkyCity Queenstown gives back to the local area through a special fund. This is called the SkyCity Queenstown Casino Community Trust. The trust has given over NZ$1.92 million to local community groups and charities.
The casino also supports local events. It is a major sponsor for festivals like the Queenstown Winter Festival and Winter Pride Queenstown. Since 2016, it has also sponsored the local ice hockey team, the SkyCity Southern Stampede.
