Skylark is a children's book written by Patricia MacLachlan. It was published in 1994. This book is a sequel, meaning it continues the story from her earlier, very popular book, Sarah, Plain and Tall.
Skylark tells more about the Witting family. It shows what happens after Sarah Wheaton comes to live with them. The book was also made into a movie!
What is Skylark About?
The story of Skylark begins after Jacob and Sarah get married. Life on the farm is usually good, but then a very bad drought hits. A drought means there is not enough rain for a long time, which makes it hard for crops to grow and animals to find water.
The Family's Big Decision
Because of the drought, the Witting family has to make a difficult choice. To keep everyone safe and healthy, Sarah, along with the children Anna and Caleb, decide to travel to Maine. Maine is a state far away from their farm. Jacob, the father, stays behind to look after the farm and wait for the rain to come.
Learning About Family
This journey is a big adventure for Anna and Caleb. Even though they are far from their father, they learn an important lesson. They discover that the love and strength of a family can stay strong, no matter how far apart people are. They wait and hope for the day when their whole family can be together again on the farm.
