Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Slav Defence is a popular way to start a game of chess for the player using the black pieces. It's a special set of moves that Black uses to respond to White's first moves. Many top chess players like to use the Slav Defence because it helps them create a strong position on the board.

The Slav Defence usually begins like this:

Black to move
  • 1.d4 d5
  • 2.c4 c6 (This is the key move for the Slav Defence!)
  • 3.Nf3 Nf6
  • 4.Nc3 (White can also play 4.e3, 4.cxd5, or 4.Qb3 here.)

Understanding the Slav Defence

After White plays 4.Nc3, Black has a choice. The most common move that defines the "Slav proper" is 4...dxc4. This move means Black captures White's pawn on c4.

Main Lines of the Slav

One important way the Slav Defence can continue is called the "Mainline." This specific sequence of moves was studied a lot during two world championship matches. These matches were between famous chess players Alexander Alekhine and Max Euwe in 1935 and 1937.

Here's how the Mainline often goes:

  • 5.a4 Bf5
  • 6.e3 e6
  • 7.Bxc4 Bb4
  • 8.0-0 0-0

The Slav Gambit

Another interesting way to play the Slav is called the "Slav Gambit." A gambit in chess means you offer a pawn to your opponent, hoping to get a better position or attack later.

In the Slav Gambit, White might play 5.e3 or 5.e4. Then, Black plays 5...b5. This move helps Black keep the extra pawn they captured earlier, which can be an advantage.

Exploring the Semi-Slav Defence

Instead of 4...dxc4, Black can choose to play 4...e6. This variation is known as the Semi-Slav Defence. It's called "Semi-Slav" because it shares some ideas with the regular Slav but also has its own unique plans.

The Russian Variation

One well-known line in the Semi-Slav is the "Russian Variation." It's sometimes also called the Botvinnik Variation, named after a famous world chess champion. This variation can lead to very sharp and exciting games.

The moves for the Russian Variation are:

  • 5.Bg5 dxc4
  • 6.e4 b5
  • 7.e5 h6
  • 8.Bh4 g5
  • 9.Nxg5 hxg5
  • 10.Bxg5 Nbd7
  • 11.exf6 Bb7
  • 12.g3 Bb7

The Meran Defence

Another popular and important line in the Semi-Slav is the "Meran Defence." This variation is known for creating solid positions for both sides, but it can also lead to complex battles.

The Meran Defence often continues with these moves:

  • 5.e3 Nbd7
  • 6.Bd3 dxc4
  • 7.Bxc4 b5
  • 8.Bd3 Bb7
  • 9.0-0 a6
  • 10.e4 c5
