A slider is a small, tasty sandwich from America. It's usually about 2 inches (5 cm) wide and comes on a special bun. People enjoy sliders as appetizers (small bites before a meal), snacks, or even as a main dish. They are super popular for game day parties in the United States!
Where Did Sliders Come From?
The word "slider" was first used to describe the small, onion-steamed burgers sold at White Castle restaurants. Other restaurants then started using the term. Most often, it means a small hamburger. Sometimes, it can mean any small sandwich served on a slider bun. White Castle even made their own special spelling, "Slyder," which they used from 1985 to 2009.
Why Are They Called Sliders?
No one is completely sure how the name "slider" started. A food expert named George Motz shared two popular ideas, both from White Castle:
- Idea 1: Sliders are so small that they "slide" right down your throat! This is the most common and obvious idea.
- Idea 2: In the old days, visiting White Castle was like a show. Workers in clean white uniforms would greet you. If you sat at the counter, they would make your burger and then "slide" it down the counter to you on a plate.
White Castle likes both stories and hasn't picked a favorite!
