The slip knot is a special type of stopper knot. You can easily untie it by pulling on one end of the rope, called the working end. This knot is similar to the running knot. A running knot also unties easily, but you pull the other end, called the standing end. Both knots are made from a basic overhand knot that has a special loop, known as a bight. This bight allows the knot to be released quickly. Slip knots are often used to start projects in crafts like crochet and knitting.

What is a Slip Knot?

A slip knot is a very useful knot because it can be undone almost instantly. Imagine you need to tie something temporarily, and then quickly release it. That's where a slip knot comes in handy! It's like a regular knot, but with a built-in "quick release" feature.

The main difference between a slip knot and a regular overhand knot is how the rope's end is handled. In a slip knot, the end is folded back on itself before being tucked in. This creates the special loop that lets you pull it to untie the knot.

How to Tie a Slip Knot

Tying a slip knot is quite simple once you get the hang of it. Here are the steps:

  • First, make a loop in your rope that looks like the letter "p".
  • Next, put your finger or a hook through this first loop.
  • Grab a small loop (a "bight") from the working end of the rope.
  • Pull this small loop through the first "p"-shaped loop you made.
  • Gently pull the knot tight. Make sure the small loop you just pulled through is still visible. This small loop is what you pull to untie the knot!

You can tie a slip knot in the middle of a rope too, not just at the end. However, the rope's main part (the "standing part") must be the one holding the weight or tension. This knot is perfect for any situation where you might need to untie something in a hurry.
