The Slocum House is a beautiful old home in Vancouver, Washington. It was built in the Victorian style, which was popular a long time ago. People sometimes call it "Carpenter Victorian." This name shows off its tall, elegant design and the amazing skill of the builders.

Some people think the house was built in 1867. However, old newspaper reports from that time don't mention a house on that land. The owner, Charles W. Slocum, was busy in other places back then. Still, many books and websites mention the 1867 date. Inside the house, there are special decorations called medallions. These medallions have dates from 1842 and 1846 on them.

Building the Slocum House

Charles Slocum wanted to build a grand house in downtown Vancouver. He started the foundation in May 1877. Workers made quick progress on the large and strong house. By early 1878, the house was finished.

A Grand Opening

The Slocum House was officially opened to society on New Year's Day in 1878. A local newspaper wrote about it. They said it was one of the prettiest homes in Washington Territory. The paper praised its completeness, neatness, and beauty. Everyone was happy for Mr. and Mrs. Slocum in their lovely new home.

Who Was Charles Slocum?

Charles W. Slocum was a skilled carpenter. He learned his trade in Rhode Island. In 1857, he came to Vancouver. He worked as a carpenter at the Vancouver Barracks. Later, he became the boss there.

Slocum's Other Work

In 1860, Charles Slocum opened several general stores. These stores were in the Pacific Northwest region. He is also known for planning the town of Boise, Idaho, in 1863.

The House Today

The Slocum House is special because it's the only building left from its old neighborhood. This area was once the historic center of Vancouver. In 1966, the house was carefully moved one block from its first spot. In 1973, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list helps protect important historical places.
