Smoky Heights, Alberta facts for kids
Smoky Heights is a small place in northern Alberta, Canada. It's part of the County of Grande Prairie No. 1. This area is located on the west side of the Smoky River, a bit northeast of a bigger city called Grande Prairie.
Exploring Smoky Heights
Smoky Heights began as a community around a special building: its post office. A post office is where people send and receive mail.
The First Post Office
The Smoky Heights post office opened on June 1, 1923. It was set up in the home of Edith and Clarence Field. Imagine having a post office right in your house! This post office served the people living in the area for a few years.
In 1927, the post office moved to a nearby place called Bezanson. Even though the post office left, the name "Smoky Heights" stuck around for the area.
The Rivertop School
On November 14, 1928, a new school was approved for the community. It was called the Rivertop School District 4371. This wasn't just any small school. It was built to be much larger than a typical one-room schoolhouse.
The Rivertop School was special because it was meant to be more than just a place for learning. It also served as a community center, where people could gather. Plus, it even had a place for the teacher to live!
The school helped educate children in Smoky Heights for many years. However, in 1955, the Rivertop School closed its doors. After that, students from the area traveled by bus to a larger, combined school in Teepee Creek.
