Smyrna was first planned out in 1817. This means someone drew a map to divide the land into lots for houses and streets. This process is called platting.
A post office was opened in Smyrna on February 12, 1827. A post office is where people send and receive mail. This post office served the community for many years. However, it closed down on July 31, 1907. After that, people in Smyrna started getting their mail from the post office in nearby Freeport.
