Snake Den State Park is a large park in Johnston, Rhode Island. It covers about 1,000 acres, which is like 750 football fields! This park is a place where people can enjoy nature and learn about farming history.

It's special because it includes a real working farm called Dame Farm. The park is mostly natural and undeveloped, meaning it has lots of open spaces. The main office for Rhode Island's parks is even located in an old farmhouse here. The park gets its interesting name from a deep, narrow crack in the rocks found on its land.

Park History

The land where Snake Den State Park now sits has a long history. It was once owned by the Steere and Dame families. You can even find an old Steere family cemetery inside the park.

In 1969, the state bought the property from the Palazzi family. They had kept the farm looking much like it did in the 1700s. The state wanted to create the park to protect open spaces in the Providence area. It also helps preserve Rhode Island's rich farming past.

In 2005, there was a plan to build a water park here. However, people living in Johnston were worried about extra traffic. So, the idea for the water park was stopped. Future plans for the park include adding picnic areas and sports fields for everyone to enjoy.

What to Do at the Park

Snake Den State Park is open all year round. It has many walking trails that are perfect for exploring. As you walk, you can see the historic Dame Farm. You can also enjoy the beautiful trees and plants, especially when the leaves change color. It's a great place to spot local wildlife too!
