Snifter facts for kids
A snifter is a special type of glass used for drinking certain aged liquors like brandy and whisky. It's also called a brandy snifter or cognac glass. This glass has a short stem and a wide bottom that gets narrower at the top.
Why Snifters Look That Way
Snifters have a special shape for a good reason! The wide bottom lets the liquid spread out, which helps its smell (aroma) rise. The narrow top then traps these smells inside the glass, so you can enjoy them better.
The rounded bottom of the glass is made to fit comfortably in your hand. Holding the glass helps to gently warm the drink inside. This warming can make the flavors and smells even stronger.
Most snifters can hold about 180 to 240 milliliters (6 to 8 US fluid ounces). However, they are usually filled with only a small amount of liquid. Some snifters are even designed so that if you lay them on their side, they will hold just the right amount without spilling.
There is also a different kind of snifter called a pipe glass or pipe snifter. This one is often used for drinks like port wine and brandy.
Using Snifters for Beer
The same things that make snifters great for brandy also make them good for certain types of beer. These are usually beers that have many complex smells and a higher alcohol content (8% or more). Examples include strong beers like imperial stout, Baltic porter, barley wine, and double India pale ale.
