The Journey of Snotty Nose Rez Kids
Darren Metz ("Young D") and Quinton Nyce ("Yung Trybez") first met in high school. Darren loved writing poetry, and Quinton was a great storyteller. They soon found out they both loved hip hop music!
They started making music together. They called their first project Minay Music. This was for a school assignment Darren had in his audio engineering class.
Early Albums and Hit Songs
The duo released their first album, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, in January 2017. Later that year, they released The Average Savage. One of their songs, "Skoden," became very popular. It was played on CBC Music and was named one of the best songs of the year!
The word "Skoden" means "let's go then." It's a phrase that many Indigenous people have used for a long time. In 2018, someone even spray-painted "Skoden" on a water tower in Sudbury!
Music with a Message
In May 2018, they released a new song called "The Warriors." This song was a protest against the Trans Mountain Pipeline. It showed how they use their music to speak up about important issues.
After a short time with a record label, Snotty Nose Rez Kids decided to release their music on their own. Their third album, TRAPLINE, came out in May 2019. It was a big success and was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize. The music magazine Exclaim! even called it one of the best hip hop albums of the year.
In 2020, the duo announced a new collection of songs called Born Deadly. It came out in April. Before that, they released two songs from it: "Real Deadly" and "Cops with Guns Are the Worst!!!".
