Soccer Comes First is a fun book from 1966. It was first called Soccer Is Also a Game. A British writer named Michael Hardcastle wrote it. This book is the first in a series. It tells the story of a made-up English football team called Scorton Rovers.

What's the Story About?

The book starts with Andy Blair. He used to be a great England striker. Now he is retired and lives in Scorton. He watches the local team, Scorton Rovers, play a game. They are not doing very well in the Second Division.

After the game, the club's chairman, Herbert Graydon, talks to Andy. He asks Andy to come out of retirement. He wants Andy to play for Scorton Rovers. Andy agrees, and his amazing skills start to help the team. Rovers begin to win more games. They move up the league table.

Andy also brings his 18-year-old son, Bobbie, into the team. Bobbie plays well too. But he gets involved with some people who try to cheat in games. These people want to fix the match results. Bobbie also has some problems with his girlfriend, Adrienne.

One day, Bobbie follows Adrienne to Bristol. This happens right before a very important game for Scorton Rovers. Andy knows he has to help his son. He deals with the people trying to cheat the games. Then he goes to find Bobbie.

At the end of the story, Andy and Bobbie are back together. They can finally focus on football. Their main goal is to help Scorton Rovers win promotion. They want to get into the First Division.
