Sodom, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sodom is a small place located in Trumbull County, Ohio, in the United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings that doesn't have its own separate local government, like a city or a town would. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

The Story Behind Sodom's Name

The community of Sodom had a post office for a while, from 1874 until 1903. The name "Sodom" has an interesting and rather funny story behind it. It was given by a person who was speaking to people about avoiding alcohol. This speaker was called a "temperance activist."

One day, this activist gave a lecture, but not many people showed up to listen. Because of the small crowd, he made a joke. He compared the community to the famous biblical city of Sodom. This comparison was meant as a lighthearted joke about the low attendance at his talk. And that's how this small Ohio community got its unusual name!
