Sofía Fernández Castañón (born 1 November 1983) is a Spanish poet, writer, and politician. She has worked in many areas, including print, television, and radio. Sofía has won several awards for her poetry.
Since January 2016, she has been a member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies. This means she helps make laws for Spain. She represents the region of Asturias for the Podemos political party. Since 2020, she has also been a deputy spokesperson for the Unidas Podemos group in parliament. In December 2021, she became the leader of Podemos in Asturias. She has also been part of her party's national board since 2017, focusing on topics like feminism and culture.

Sofía Castañón grew up in a family that loved books. Her mother, Laura Castañón, is also a writer. Her family comes from the mining areas of Asturias.
Early Life and Education
Sofía studied Spanish Philology at the University of Oviedo. This means she learned a lot about the Spanish language and literature. She enjoys writing poetry and also works as a journalist. She also teaches creative writing workshops.
Writing and Media Work
Sofía has written several poetry books in both Spanish and Asturian. She has won awards for her poetry, including:

- The Pablo García Baena de Poesía Joven Award in 2007
- The Nené Losada Rico Award in 2009
From 2009 to 2010, she had a scholarship at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid. She was also recognized as a "Voz + Joven" (Youngest Voice) poet in 2010.
Sofía directed a radio show called El sillón Voltaire from 2010 to 2011. She also coordinated reading clubs in Gijón from 2012 to 2015. She taught workshops on writing and making videos.
Filmmaking and Documentaries
Sofía is part of a company called Señor Paraguas. They create music videos, documentaries, and video art. Their work often looks at culture from a social and political point of view.
In 2014, she directed her first full-length film, a documentary called Se dice poeta. In this film, Sofía interviewed 21 women poets. They talked about their connection to poetry and how their work is shared. The documentary also explored why some people might prefer the term "poetess" instead of "poet" for women. It looked at how gender plays a role in poetry in Spain today.
Sofía has also worked for several TV channels, including Televisión Local Gijón and TeleAsturias. For Televisión del Principado de Asturias (TPA), she directed a series called Dicires. This was a visual dictionary of the Asturian language, with 120 short video clips. She has also written articles for newspapers like El Comercio and La Nueva España, and online news sites like Huffington Post.
Political Journey
Sofía Castañón became involved in politics with the Podemos party.
Joining the Congress of Deputies
In January 2015, she became a member of the Citizen Council of Podemos in Gijón. In July 2015, she ran in the party's elections and received many votes.
When she officially took her seat in the Congress of Deputies in January 2016, she used the Asturian language. She promised to follow the Constitution but also work to change it. She said, "For the memory of our grandmothers, for the future of our children. Never again a country without its people and its towns."
She was re-elected to the Congress in July 2016. In Congress, she is currently the spokesperson for the Equality Commission. She also works on a special group that deals with gender violence.
Roles in Podemos
In February 2017, Sofía was chosen as the Secretary of Intersectional Feminism and LGBTI for Podemos. This was a new role in the party. It means she works to promote equality and rights for all people, no matter their gender, sexual orientation, or background.
