Soho Baptist Chapel (detail)

The Soho Baptist Chapel is a church building located at 166a Shaftesbury Avenue in London. It sits right on the corner with Mercer Street. This building was first used by a group of Baptist Christians. That original church later moved to North Finchley and is now known as High Road Baptist Church. Today, the building is home to the Chinese Church in London.

History of the Building

The church building was constructed between 1887 and 1888. It was designed by an architect named William Gillbee Scott. The building was made for a specific group of Baptist Christians. This Christian community had been meeting together since 1791.

In 1916 and 1917, the building was sold. Another Baptist church group bought it. They needed a new place because their old church building, which was in Gower Street, was no longer available. After they moved in, the building became known as the Gower Street Memorial Chapel.

Today, this historic building serves as the Soho Outreach Centre for the Chinese Church in London. It continues to be a place of worship and community for many people.
