Soho Baptist Chapel (detail)

The Soho Baptist Chapel is a special building in London, located at 166a Shaftesbury Avenue. It stands right on the corner with Mercer Street. This building has a long and interesting history.

It was first built as a Baptist church. Over time, that original church moved to a new location in North Finchley and is now known as High Road Baptist Church. Today, the building in Soho is home to the Chinese Church in London.

A Look Back: The Church's Story

This church building was constructed a long time ago, between 1887 and 1888. It was designed by an architect named William Gillbee Scott. The building was made for a specific group of Baptists called Strict Baptists. This community had been around since 1791.

Later, in 1916 and 1917, the building was sold. Another Strict Baptist church bought it. They needed a new home because their lease on a chapel in Gower Street had finished after 99 years. When they moved in, the church became known as the Gower Street Memorial Chapel.

Today, the building is used by the Chinese Church in London. It serves as their Soho Outreach Centre, helping the local community.
