Sokuri 2
A sokuri woven basket

A sokuri (pronounced "so-koo-ree") is a special kind of round basket from Korea. It's made by weaving thin strips of bamboo. People use sokuri for many things in the kitchen. For example, they use it to drain water from washed grains, dry vegetables, or let fried food cool down and drip off extra oil.

What is a Sokuri?

A sokuri is a traditional Korean basket. It has a round shape and a small rim around the edge. These baskets are usually between 25 and 50 centimeters (about 10 to 20 inches) wide. The rim stands up about 4 centimeters (about 1.5 inches) high. This design helps keep things inside the basket.

How is a Sokuri Made?

Sokuri are made using a skill called basket weaving. The craftspeople carefully split bamboo into very thin, flexible strips. They then weave these strips together by hand. This creates a strong but lightweight basket. Making a sokuri takes a lot of patience and skill.

What is a Sokuri Used For?

Sokuri are very useful in Korean kitchens. Here are some common ways people use them:

  • Straining Grains: After washing rice or other grains, people put them in a sokuri. The small gaps in the weaving let the water drain out.
  • Drying Vegetables: Freshly washed vegetables, like herbs or leafy greens, can be spread out on a sokuri to air dry. This is a natural way to prepare them for cooking or storage.
  • Draining Fried Food: When food like Dongtae-jeon (a type of Korean pancake) is fried, it can be placed on a sokuri. The basket helps drain away extra oil, making the food less greasy.
  • Storing Food: Sometimes, sokuri are used to hold fruits or vegetables, like Persimmons or soybeans, allowing air to circulate around them.
