Zaru facts for kids
A zaru (say "zah-roo") is a special kind of basket or strainer from Japan. It's usually flat or shallow. People use zaru when they are making or serving Japanese food. While many zaru are made from bamboo, you can also find them made from plastic or metal. They work a lot like a sieve or a colander that you might use in your kitchen.
Taking Care of a Zaru
After using a zaru, it's important to let it air dry completely. This helps stop tiny germs, like bacteria or fungi, from growing on it. Drying your zaru properly also helps it last longer. However, if a bamboo zaru is left in very strong sunlight, the bamboo can get damaged and crack.
