The Solomon Goodrich Homestead is a really old and important house in Georgia, Vermont. You can find it at 4787 Ethan Allen Highway, which is also United States Route 7. Some parts of this house were built way back in the late 1780s! This makes it one of the oldest buildings still standing in the area. The front part, made of brick, shows a cool style called Federal architecture. Because it's so special, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Exploring the Homestead's Design

The Solomon Goodrich Homestead is located in a quiet, countryside area of central Georgia. It sits on the west side of US 7. The house is actually made up of two buildings joined together. One part is made of brick, and the other is built with wood.

The Main Brick House

The main part of the house is a two-and-a-half story building made of brick. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a side gable roof. There are two chimneys at the ends of the house. The front of the house has five sections, with the main door in the middle. The windows are simple and have brick tops.

The Older Wooden Section

Attached to the back of the brick house is an older, one-and-a-half story wooden building. The wooden beams used to build this part were shaped by hand using an axe. This shows how old the building truly is!

A Look at the Homestead's History

This historic house was built by Solomon Goodrich. He was one of the first people to settle in the town of Georgia. The oldest part of the house seems to have been built around 1786. This was not long after Goodrich first arrived in the area.

Building the Brick Section

The main brick part of the house was built later, in the early 1800s. This happened after a brickyard and a sawmill were set up in the town. Having these businesses nearby made it easier to get the materials needed to build with brick.

Life on the Farm

The older wooden part of the house was often used as a summer kitchen. This means it was a place where cooking and other farm tasks happened during warmer months. It was probably used for things like making butter. The farm stayed in the Goodrich family until 1854. After that, it was owned and run by the Ballard family for many years.
