The Great Debate of Tortosa
Solomon Bonfed was present at a very important event called the Controversy of Tortosa. This was a big public debate that happened between 1413 and 1414. During this debate, Jewish and Christian scholars discussed their beliefs.
Many of Bonfed's poems were written for the people who took part in this debate. He used his poetry to share his thoughts and feelings about the discussions that were happening.
Bonfed's Answer to a Letter
His diwan also contains a special answer to a letter. This letter was from a person named Astruc Raimuch of Fraga, who was a Jewish person who had converted to Christianity.
In his letter, Astruc Raimuch wrote with great excitement about Christian beliefs. He tried to explain ideas like the Trinity, original sin, and redemption using the Bible.
Even though the letter wasn't sent directly to him, Bonfed felt it was important to respond. He carefully looked at the Christian ideas that Astruc Raimuch wrote about. Bonfed then explained why he thought these ideas were not logical or easy to believe.
He wrote something like, "You are changing the meaning of the Bible to try and prove the Trinity. If you wanted to prove there were four parts instead of three, you could make it sound just as convincing from the Old Testament!" This shows how strongly he felt about his own beliefs.
