Someday Angeline is a fun children's book written by Louis Sachar. It tells the story of a smart girl named Angeline Persopolis. She sometimes has a tough time at school because she's so clever! The book first came out in 1983. It became popular again in 2005 after Louis Sachar wrote his famous book, Holes.
Angeline's Story
Angeline Persopolis is super smart. She knows a lot about ocean animals and the ocean. People even say she knew things "before she was born"! Her very first word was "octopus". Even though she is only eight years old, she goes to the sixth grade.
Angeline wants to be a garbage collector when she grows up, just like her dad. But her father hopes she will become famous. Sometimes, he even feels a bit worried about how smart she is.
School Troubles
At school, Angeline faces some problems. Other students sometimes pick on her. Her teacher, Mrs. Hardlick, often misunderstands her. Angeline has only two friends at school. One is Miss Turbone, a fifth-grade teacher. The other is Gary "Goon" Boone, who is the class clown. Gary later gets his own book, Dogs Don't Tell Jokes.
Family Hopes
Angeline's father wants the very best for her. He often pushes her quite hard to do well. One time, Angeline was chosen to be "Secretary of Trash" at school. Her dad got upset about this. He told her she had to quit.
The next day, Mrs. Hardlick would not listen when Angeline tried to resign. Angeline became so frustrated that she made a big mess in the classroom. She yelled that everything was "Garbage!" Mrs. Hardlick was very angry. She told Angeline to come back with a note signed by her father.
Running Away
For the next week, Angeline did not go to school. Instead, she went to an aquarium every day. Her father came home after she did, so he did not know she was skipping school.
When Miss Turbone found out, she arranged to talk with Angeline's father. It seems like Miss Turbone and Mr. Persopolis started to like each other when they met! They decided that Angeline would move to Miss Turbone's fifth-grade class. They also planned for Angeline to go back to Mrs. Hardlick's class for a day or two while the change was arranged. They even planned to go on a date the next evening.
However, Mrs. Hardlick upset Angeline one more time. Angeline ran away from school again. This time, she went to a beach. She jumped off the pier to see the fish better. She got into a tricky situation in the water but was saved by a fisherman. Luckily, she was completely fine afterward.
Sequel Book
There is another book that continues Angeline's story. It is called Dogs Don't Tell Jokes and came out in 1991. This book is mostly about Gary, the class clown. Many of the characters from Someday Angeline are in it. However, Angeline is now at a different school.
