The Story of Tas and Enya
The main character in the book is Thomas Alexander St. John Kennedy, who everyone calls "Tas." He is a preteen boy who lives on a farm with his parents and two sisters. Tas also has a dog named Reebok. Sometimes, Tas attends a special school.
New Neighbors and a Strange Discovery
A girl from Northern Ireland, Enya Dunleavy, moves into the house next door to Tas. They quickly become friends. One day, they find a box filled with dangerous items near their homes. Enya seems very scared by this discovery, but Tas does not know why.
A Prank Goes Wrong
Tas tries to play a trick on a school bully named Darren, also known as "Dreadlock." However, his teacher, Mr. McKinlay, or "Mac," accidentally falls for the prank and faints. This causes everyone to be sent home from school early.
Since Enya was not at school that day, Tas goes to her house. He sees Enya's parents arguing with another man. Suddenly, Tas is hurt during the argument.
Hospital Stay and a Big Secret
Tas is taken to the hospital. While he is there, Enya's uncle, Seamus, tries to harm him for listening to the argument. Luckily, Mr. Mac saves Tas. Both Tas and Mr. Mac spend several weeks recovering in the hospital before they can go back to school.
After returning to school, Tas has another run-in with Dreadlock. Later, he meets Enya, who tells him a big secret: she was the one who accidentally hurt Tas.
Music, Family, and a Scholarship
Tas performs well in a school play of Peter and the Wolf. Because of his performance, he is invited to try out for a special music school. After his audition, he goes home and finds his dog, Reebok, very sick from eating snail pellets.
Later, Seamus is arrested for having dangerous materials and for his actions against Tas. After this, Enya's family becomes more open and welcoming to visitors.
Tas is later given a scholarship to the music school. It is then that he shares a surprising fact: he is blind.
